Felting is the oldest known way to construct a textile. Natural fibres like cotton and wool have lots of scales - with water and friction, the scales will open up and connect with other fibres close by. A magical process, a textile is formed as the fibres blend and compact in a naturally beautiful way.
Catherine found this skill when she studied in Finland over 20 years ago. She has been felting ever since. Similar to making bread or pottery, the process involves laying down fibres in certain ways and , manipulating with a rolling matt and your hands. Your tutor Catherine has been teaching felting for over 10 years and loves to share her knowledge and experience.
In this class you will have an introduction to felting along with the materials and equipment. Choose form over 50 shades of merino wool along with other natural fibres like cottons, hemp, jute, flax, silks etc. You will begin by felting a small square to give students chance to understand the process. Catherine will provide lots of demonstrations and guidance along the way. Embark on a larger scale project and try out the technique 'Nuno' (meaning cloth in Japanese).
Here you can create a neck warmer/scarf or if you prefer, keep your textile flat and make a wall hanging/ book cover. Catherine offers plenty advise for finish.
The venue is fully COVID compliant, tea and coffee provided. Parking is free in surrounding streets - ground floor studio with toilet upstairs. Suitable age 16 upwards.
